Sound the alarm over rape and sexual violence in Darfur
The systematic use of rape as a weapon of war on women and girls - including some as young as eight - is widespread and happening on a daily basis. This is a crime against humanity. Patrols designed to keep women safe have been called off in many areas.
In order to immediately improve this terrible situation, world leaders must:
- Make sure that the peacekeepers in Darfur protect women from rape by having more female staff on the ground and carrying out daily patrols around all civilian camps.
- Give the support and help African peacekeepers already in Darfur need so that they can better protect civilians.
- Get a UN force for Darfur so women get better protection from rape and sexual violence and that reports of abuse are investigated.
- Get the Government of Sudan to disarm the Janjawid militia who have been responsible for a large number of the attacks in Darfur and Eastern Chad.
- Get the Government of Sudan to allow aid agencies to reach victims of rape and sexual violence throughout Darfur.
- Make sure that the Government of Sudan will bring to court those accused of rape and sexual assaults in Darfur.
