Message to Merkel

Dear Chancellor,

The humanitarian situation in Darfur is on a knife-edge. Every day the conflict continues more people are made homeless, raped or killed. UN agencies state that under current conditions the humanitarian effort is "unmanageable". Not only are one million people beyond the reach of aid, but aid workers themselves are under attack.

In March you said: "I want to state frankly that we have to consider stronger sanctions". You were right to say that the time has come to take immediate actions to find a political solution to end the conflict in Darfur, and I was encouraged that at last the international community was going to replace words with action. However, months later we are still to see any decisive action. There is now a real danger that unless the upcoming G8 and European summits prioritise Darfur, your opportunity to show leadership on this crisis will have been squandered.

I urge you to do all you can to get the G8 to increase the pressure on all parties, particularly the Government of Sudan, to end the killing and to ensure the EU follows the US lead and imposes its own targeted sanctions immediately. I hope you will do all that you can in the coming weeks to ensure Germany leads the way in seeking an end to the slaughter in Darfur.

Best regards,

Thank you for taking action.
